Physician assistant jobs work under physicians and surgeons and are trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventative health care services as directed by a physician. Reviewing medical histories, examining and treating patients, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests are common tasks for physician assistant careers. Typically working a 40 hour work week in clinics, physician assistants that work in hospitals work the standard hours and may be required to be on call, making evenings, nights, weekends, and early mornings possibly.

The educational and training requirements for a physician assistant job involves 2 years of study. These programs are offered by health schools, academic health centers, medical schools, and 4 year colleges. Some community colleges, military programs, and hospitals offer physician assistant programs that are accredited and have affiliations with medical schools. 2 years of college and some experience within the health care field is sufficient amount of experience for applying to physician assistant programs.

In 2006 there were 66,000 physician assistants, with the majority of those workers employed in physician's offices. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an increase in physician assistant employment of 27 percent during 2006 to 2016 will occur. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations and will stem from the expansion in the health care industry. Job prospects will be good for physician assistants as they will find a variety positions in different settings such as hospitals, academic medical centers, prisons, and public clinics. Additional employment will be due to the physician assistants that leave their careers for other occupations or that leave the workforce entirely.
